On Chicago’s south side, an average day finds kids prepping for school as their parents head off to work, young adults trying to make a living, and the elders keeping an eye on things from their front porches. But in this tough neighborhood, real dangers threaten daily to squelch dreams, and the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences. From Emmy® winner Lena Waithe, The Chi is a timely coming-of-age drama series centered on a group of residents who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.

I have no idea about how life is on the south side of Chicago, but according to reviews I have seen across the internet, this show seems pretty accurate.

I’ll tell you straight up, I’m from Chicago long time resident of the South Side and this show is by far the best portrayal of the South Side I have ever seen on TV.

The show ties together several families and peoples destinies, and I like to follow them all. One of my favorite actor, Brandons (Jason Mitchell) adventure into the food business, the adolecent friends Kevin (Alex R. Hibbert), ‘Papa’ (Shamon Brown Jr.) and Jake (Michael Epps). The traumatized war veteran Ronnie (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, or the obsessed-by-sneakers highly potent Emmett (Jacob Latimore) … the list goes on. It takes a smaller dive in the 3rd season when one of the main characters disappers from the show, but it kind of picks up when the main crime story through the hole season is introduced to the show.

What happened with season 4? I had high expectations, but it was really bland. No real focus in the storylines and mainly nothing really interesting to tell. Mainly focusing on the crooked mayor, which to me is the least interesting part of the show.

‘The Chi’ is primarily set on the streets of Chicago. To be more specific, the show is set in the South Side of Chicago and explores some of the problems faced by the residents of the area. Hence, the area plays an integral role in the series. It almost functions as if it were another character in the Showtime production. Thus, it is natural for viewers to wonder where the series has been filmed. Is it shot in Chicago as well? Or has some other place been used to depict the city?

‘The Chi’ is actually filmed in Chicago. This is where the show is set too. Being filmed in the same place allows the show to depict its setting rather authentically. Most of the filming is carried out in Cinespace Chicago Film Studios. The production facility is located on 2621 W 15th Pl.

However, filming is also carried out on location in the city. For instance, local sources have revealed how filming was carried out in North Lawndale. Apparently, there had been a controversy when the residents of resource-deficient North Lawndale had gotten excited due to a set for a corner store, mistaking it for an actual shop. The residents’ irritation increased when unopened boxes of food and supplies were dumped. The production attempted to make up for their mistake by donating unexpired food and supplies used for filming to a shelter or a church later.

Both Jason Mitchell and Alex Hibbert have acted in Oscar-nominated films: “Straight Outta Compton” and “Moonlight”, respectively. Moonlight went on to win three awards for Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Best Adapted Screenplay, and even Best Picture.

I watched this streaming on Hbo, so not much to talk about there when it comes to video and audio.
