Yeah Yeah Yeahs ”Heads Will Roll” (Rock/Electronic) [Music/Track]

Year: 2009
Genre: Rock/Electronic
From: The album “It’s Blitz!

OFF WITH YOUR HEAD
DANCE ’TIL YOU’RE DEAD
HEADS WILL ROLL … ON THE FLOOR

The song is sung from the viewpoint of the Queen of Hearts in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The music video for “Heads Will Roll” was directed by Richard Ayoade. It features the band playing in a (presumably) underground venue when a dancing werewolf (whose dancing is reminiscent of Michael Jackson) appears on stage. A light flashes halfway through the music video and the werewolf transforms. He then proceeds to chase after the audience and kills most of them. The video then ends with the band having been murdered while Karen O continues singing, her head severed from her body. The music video contains some mockery of horror in general; instead of blood, there is red glitter and confetti and Karen O keeps singing while decapitated. In the UK, there are two different versions of this video, the second replacing the violent conclusion with repeated clips from the previous section of the video, but it shows the confetti falling onto the band. It was nominated for a MTV Video Music Award for Breakthrough Video.

THE BAND

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an American indie rock band formed in New York City in 2000. The group is composed of vocalist and pianist Karen O (born Karen Lee Orzolek), guitarist and keyboardist Nick Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase. The band has recorded four studio albums; the first, Fever to Tell, was released in 2003. The second, Show Your Bones, was released in 2006 and was named the second best album of the year by NME. Their third studio album, It’s Blitz!, was released in March 2009. All three albums earned the band Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Music Album. Their fourth album, Mosquito, was released in April 2013.

This track ”Heads Will Roll” was included on the bands 3rd album that was released in March 2009 and titled It’s Blitz!. The band says the album sounds different from their previous ones but “still [sounds] like Yeah Yeah Yeahs”. It was originally set to be released on 13 April, but following an internet leak on 22 February, the band’s label, Interscope, pulled the release date closer to reduce the leak’s impact. The album spawned three singles: “Zero”, “Heads Will Roll,” and “Skeletons.” It’s Blitz! was named second best album of 2009 by Spin Magazine and third best by NME, along with “Zero” from the album listed as the best track of the year by both.

HEADS WILL ROLL

Off with your head
Dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
On the floor

Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
The rivers all wet
You’re all chrome

Dripping with alchemy
Shiver stop shivering
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome

The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out, oh no

The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out the girls cry out
The men cry out, oh no

Off, off with your head
Dance, dance ’til you’re dead
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
On the floor

You came last
Take the past
Shut your eyes
Realize

You came last
Take the past
Shut your eyes
Realize

Glitter on the west streets
Silver over everything
The glitter’s all wet
You’re all chrome
You’re all chrome

Oh oh
Oh!
Oh oh

Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead

Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
Off off off with your head
Dance dance dance ’til you’re dead
