Invasion USA (Action) 1985 [Movie/Review]

Year: 1985
Genre: Action
Director: Joseph Zito
Original Title: –
Source: Blu-Ray (88 Films)

When an army of mercenaries land on US soil, America was unprepared. With his band of vicious terrorists, Mikhail Rostov (Richard Lynch, Puppet Master III: Toulon’s Revenge) helps spread fear and panic into the land of the free. However, Rostov knows that before he can truly capture the home of the brave, they will need to eliminate one man; the man who still haunts Rostov’s dreams… that man is Matt Hunter (Chuck Norris, Missing in Action).

Hunter is a one-man army, and when an attempt on his life ends with his house blown to bits, and best buddy dead, the terrorists become the terrorised as Hunter dismantles and disturbs their various attacks; reducing Rostov’s mighty army by the minute. Featuring jaw-dropping set-pieces, all under the masterful eye of cult fi lmmaker Joseph Zito (Friday the 13th Part 4: The Final Chapter), Invasion U.S.A proudly sits at the apex of Cannon-carnage.

I have to admit, I’m really not a big Chuck Norris fan. I think his fighting style compared to for example Bruce Lee looks cluncky and also for him being a nutjob christian. With that said, this one I like a lot in all it’s “Cannon Film-ines”.

I mean what’s not to like …

  1. The main bad guy looks like a transgender Klaus Kinski 🙂
  2. Granade launcher that you don’t have to reload 🙂
  3. A Chuck Norris, that for some reason knows every place the bad guys are gonna attack 🙂
  4. The girl playing the journalist who must have won her role in a lottery … because she can’t be an actress for a living 🙂
  5. The US is invaded by foreign forces, but it takes forever before they get involved 🙂
  6. A military escort for when Chuck Norris gets arrested, but they stop everytime a journalist wants to interview him 🙂

I love these kind of movies for all it’s “makes no sense-ines”, but I can’t help but wonder if there are people out there that watches this and are actually emotional invested in it, sitting on the edge of their seat and are seriously wondering how this will turn out 🙂

It was filmed in and around the Florida area and some indoor scenes in Georgia.

Richard Lynch and his crew blew up a real residential neighborhood during shooting. It was slated for demolition due to expansion of Hartsfield Airport’s runway, so the Atlanta Film Commission gave the Cannon Group permission to blow it up. The area is currently the site of the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park, GA.

One day during filming, Joseph Zito was told by a PA that Menahem Golan was on the phone, wanting to talk to him. Zito feared the worst, knowing Golan’s frugal ways and history of slashing budgets, but took the call anyway. Much to his surprise, Golan said he was delighted with the footage he had seen and was giving the production an extra $2 million dollars.

Cannon completely removed all the story elements and background characters in the editing room, in order to concentrate on Chuck Norris and the action. Editor Daniel Loewenthal has stated that Cannon’s cut made the film heavily episodic and pretty much a collection of explosive action scenes.

Chuck Norris performed most of his own stunts, including the scene where he hangs off the side of pick-up while it is driven through shopping center kiosks and windows.

Avenging Force (1986) was originally written as a sequel to this film with Chuck Norris returning to the role of Matt Hunter. When he was uninterested, the role was rewritten to be younger and was given to rising Cannon star Michael Dudikoff instead. Despite sharing the same main character name, the finished film was no longer truly a sequel or prequel to the earlier film, but it stood on it’s own as a stand-alone movie.

Until 2007, this was MGM’s second highest selling home video title, behind Gone with the Wind (1939).

88 films version on Blu-Ray was the one I watched both audio and picture quality is okey, nothing extremely good but ok.
