Scrappy, willful, and fiercely self-reliant spitfire hoyden automobile mechanic Tomasina ‘Tommy’ Boyd develops a huge crush on cocky race car driving dreamboat hunk Randy Starr after meeting Randy at a party held at a jerky rich guy’s house. However, male chauvinist Randy won’t take Tommy seriously because she’s a gal, so Tommy dares Randy to a high stakes souped-up automobile race in order to win over his respect.
I love movies like this, that’s meant to be “normal movies”, but gets very comedic since either the director doesn’t know what he’s doing or just time makes things look funny to us now. I guess you could classifie this as a T&A comedy, but it has more of a drama touch to it than your regular Porky’s clones. I would rate this even higher if it weren’t for the kind of dragged out last act.

After the initial introduction of the main girl where she plays basket with her male friends just to show us how much of a boy she is 🙂 … we get introduced to her friend Seville (played by Kristi Somers) with purple/pink eyeshadow more or less all over her upper face, that’s supposed to be sexy, I guess?
About 12 minutes in, we get the first highlight as we see Seville and some other girls the 1980’s throw-up, like a bootleg Freddy Mercury in a dance number with a lot of close ups on crouches and asses, that’s got to be seen to be believed 🙂 This probably was serious, but it’s impossible not to laugh and it goes on for about 3-4 minutes.
Next up we get the classic shower room scene where the camera doesn’t shy away from showing a bunch of naked ladies (one of the things I love about 1980’s cinema 🙂 )
After that we get some “rapey” tough guys, a TV audition with some Benny Hill looking slimy boss, A “forever-long” motorcycling scene, a “Tomgirl” looking racing boss with make-up that treats women like shit and have too many teeth, before it’s more or less only about Tomasina and her crush Randy Starr’s romantic on and off relations and driving competition(s).
Betsy Russell (later known from all the “Saw” movies) as Tomasina ‘Tomboy’ Boyd is really beautiful, and why she’s called a “Tomboy” must be an 80’s thing. Just because she’s interested in cars, motorcycles, engines and not just dating guys, she’s a tomboy? WTF the 1980’s! 🙂
So I watched this on a borrowed blu-ray from Scorpion Releasing that’s now out of print. We need a new edition, NOW! … so we don’t have to pay around $60 for it on Ebay.
